Choking

A week ago, I read on Facebook about a 9-day old baby who died because of choking while having his bottle. A few days after that, I saw a picture of a 5-month old baby who died while she was co-sleeping with her parents. These incidents are not accidents but the will of God. It is just so sad that they were given so little time with their parents.

Even before reading this, I have always been so paranoid when it comes to my baby. I never leave him alone even just for a second. I let him play anywhere but I make sure he don't pick up something and put it in his mouth.

I decided to know more and find out the foods that kids are more likely to choke on:
  1. Hot dogs
  2. Nuts
  3. Grapes
  4. Sticky candy/Chewing gum
  5. Popcorn
  6. Raw Veggies
I give some of this to my 17 months but I make sure I slice it to smaller pieces or I mashed it. AND I never take my eyes off him while eating. In cases of choking for children 1 year and up, you should learn how to do the Heimlich maneuver. I saw this very brief but clear video :)

This second video is first aid for infants choking.

I guess the bottom line is: In cases of emergency, never panic. Remember the steps for first aid and when all else fails, call for help. It never hurts to do a little research and read a little about things that concerns us. Be prepared, be safe!
